V.V. Talanov — the founder of the state variety testing system, an excellent plant breeder and organizer of the domestic agricultural research method

Abstract

Goal. To reveal the main milestones of life and creative path, to summarize the most important scientific achievements of the talented scientist-breeder, one of the organizers of domestic industry research and higher professional agricultural education — V.V. Talanov. Methods. General scientific — analysis, synthesis, classification; historical — problem-chronological, comparative-historical, retrospective, and biographical. Results. It is proved that V.V. Talanov was the initiator of the creation of many domestic research institutions and educational institutions, their structural units. In the Ukrainian lands, the most important organizational achievement of the scientist was the foundation of the Katerynoslav Agricultural Research Station. He organized the Bureau for the Introduction and Distribution of New Varieties of Field Plants and established a state variety testing network, which was later merged into the All-Union one. V.V. Talanov is the author of high-yielding varieties of durum wheat, hybrids of corn and alfalfa. He developed the principle of long-term experiments, which became the basis for the introduction of a system of state variety testing in the country. Conclusions. The scientific heritage of the scientist is systematized in the following directions: introduction and selection of agricultural plants, state variety testing and standardization, zoning. Scientific developments of V.V. Talanov created the basis for the replacement of non-varietal material in the country by more productive varietal, which allowed to obtain additional hundreds of millions of tons of grain and other crop products.
