Professor A.K. Skorokhodko — the organizer of higher veterinary education in Ukraine and developer of theoretical and methodological foundations of animal hygiene

Abstract

Goal. To highlight the scientific achievements of the Doctor of Veterinary Sciences, Professor A.K. Skorohodko in the field of hygiene of farm animals. Methods. General scientific, interdisciplinary, and historical. During the research and systematization of the scientific heritage of the scientist, methods of source and archival analysis were used. The biographical method was used to study his biography, while the traditional method was used to conduct historical-biographical studies. Results. The main factors are revealed in the formation of the scientific outlook of A.K. Skorohodko, and the formation of priority areas of his creative activity. The theoretical and practical contribution to the organization of research in animal husbandry and higher professional education in Ukraine is characterized. An analysis is performed of the scientific heritage of A.K. Skorohodko, and the use of his individual scientific developments at the modern stage of animal husbandry development is shown. Conclusions. The main components of the scientist’s creative work are as follows: problems of the influence of microclimatic factors on the growth and development of farm animals, physiological and hygienic standards for growing young animals, feeding hygiene and assessment of feed quality, the basics of sanitary and hygienic assessment of the external environment, hygienic requirements for livestock premises, etc. The priority of Professor A.K. Skorohodko is proven in the development of the method of cold growing of young animals, as well as the expansion of the spectrum of the natural fodder base of animal husbandry. For the first time, the scientist has researched and implemented on a regional scale the use of iron compounds to reduce the mortality of piglets. The study of the influence of environmental factors on the physiological state and reactivity of the organism, the natural radioactivity of the organs of various species of animals, the mechanism of heat regulation and heat exchange under different conditions of their keeping, the specifics of the course of physiological processes in high-yielding cows has been updated by the scientist.
